Ingredients

For the filling
  • 1 lb ground beef (preferably 85% lean) For the best flavor and texture.
  • 1 cup fresh Thai basil leaves Use more for added flavor.
  • 1 medium onion, chopped Provides sweetness and flavor.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Fresh garlic for the best taste.
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar Adds a hint of sweetness.
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce For seasoning.
  • 1 tbsp fish sauce Enhances the umami flavor.
  • 1/2 tsp chili flakes Optional for spice.
For rolling
  • 8 pieces rice paper wrappers For wrapping the beef filling.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a wide skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat without moving it too much to form a crust.
  2. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic once the beef is nearly cooked, and sauté until soft.
  3. Sprinkle in the brown sugar, soy sauce, and fish sauce, and let it bubble for a minute.
  4. Remove from heat and fold in the fresh Thai basil, allowing it to wilt. Let the mixture cool.
Rolling
  1. Fill a shallow plate with warm water and dip one rice paper sheet to soften it.
  2. Place the softened rice paper on a clean towel and spoon a bit of the beef mixture along with a couple of extra basil leaves in the center.
  3. Fold the sides in and roll up tightly like a burrito. Repeat with remaining ingredients.
Serving
  1. Arrange the finished rolls on a serving plate and serve immediately.

Notes

For added crunch, you can include slivered carrots and cucumbers inside the rolls. If rice paper runs out, use lettuce cups instead.
