  • 2-3 pieces apples (Fuji or Gala recommended) Slice them thick for best texture.
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar Sprinkle generously in the pan.
  • 1/4 cup butter Use unsalted butter for best results.
For the cake
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon Essential for flavor.
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt Enhances flavor.
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 pieces eggs Must be at room temperature.
  • 1/2 cup milk Whole milk recommended.
  • 1/2 cup butter (melted) Can microwave until pliable.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Optional but recommended.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and butter your cake pan generously.
  2. Sprinkle the brown sugar evenly across the bottom of the pan.
  3. Arrange the sliced apples in a decorative pattern over the brown sugar.
Making the batter
  1. In a mixing bowl, cream together the melted butter and granulated sugar.
  2. Add eggs and mix well.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk until just combined.
Baking
  1. Spread the batter evenly over the apples.
  2. Bake in preheated oven for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out mostly clean.
  3. Allow to cool for a few minutes, then carefully flip onto a serving plate.

Notes

Top with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for extra magic. For best texture, serve warm. Dust with powdered sugar for guests.
